Apple Mac OS X
Apple are frequently updating their software, mostly through the automatic Apple Software Updates application built into Mac OS X (as seen under the Apple menu). These updates are almost always important and we highly recommend using this service.

Occassionally there are other updates that don't come through this system (like Firmware updates) that you may miss, so we recommend checking Apple's Downloads section from time to time.

Click here to open the Apple Downloads section in a new window (you can close the new window to return to the Mac Alert site).

Parallels Desktop

Parallels Desktop
Parallels Desktop for Mac is the first solution that gives Apple users the ability to run Windows, Linux or any other operating system and their critical applications at the same time as Mac OS X on any Intel-powered iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook or MacBook Pro.

Unlike dual-boot solutions, in which users must completely shut down Mac OS X and endure a full OS start-up cycle to access a important application, Parallels Desktop for Mac empowers users with the ability to run important Windows programs like Outlook, Access, Internet Explorer and all other applications without having to give up the usability and functionality of their Mac OS X machine even for a few minutes.

We have been using Parallels Desktop here at Mac Alert and are quite impressed with its performance.

Microsoft
  Microsoft Office
Make the most of your Microsoft product for the Macintosh by downloading free updates, converters, and other software — or download a full or trial version of some programs.

Adobe (and Macromedia)
  Microsoft Office
Not too long ago, Adobe purchased Macromedia. Effectively this brings together two companies that largely produced competing software. One upside is that now you can access all the updates and trials from the same place!

BackJack

BackJack
We use BackJack here at Mac Alert and are very impressed with the service. It is an inexpensive way to ensure offsite backup of critical data. I say critical because as you can imagine uploading Gigs and Gigs is just not going to work.

To give you an example, we backup our FileMaker database of around 100MB. We have 2GB storage so I use some of the extra space by storing our Admin folder and also specifying to keep 5 older backups.

I would recommend this service for things like MYOB files, Filemaker databases, basically anything which has smallish files in like Word or Excel such as Quote Folders, Admin Folders, etc.

When you signup with our promo code of ‘MacAlert’ the activation fee of US$25 will be waived.

  • Click here to open the BackJack subscription section in a new window (you can close the new window to return to the Mac Alert site).

  • Click here to download the BackJack client software.
